The week had been the coldest ever recorded.
Temperatures averaged 35 below zero for the
daily highs! Washington DC had become a lifeless
wasteland, no humans, or pets, or even crickets,
were to be found. Now, normally when you visit
the Smithsonian, you don't mind
if no crickets are
around. But things were different now. At these
temperatures, if you took a cup of steaming hot
water outside and threw it into the air it would
make a loud krakle noise, and then clunk to the
ground as ice. This (and the fact that there were
no crickets) caused Stephanie and David great
consternation when they heard the latest news
story: "A lost flock of Seagulls has wandered
into Washington! They were last seen on the
mall in front of the Smithsonian Museum.
They will all surely perish with no chance
for drinking water or eating crickets! Ohh,
what will happen?
Well, after talking things over with Mom, they all
agreed, they would donate thier last bag of unpoped
popcorn to try and save the poor birds, because after
all, they can fly pretty well.
They quickly threw the bag in the microwave, while
bundling up for the deep freeze. They called up Sally
and asked her to meet them at the mall so she could
photogragh this valient effort that was underway.
Then it was off to the metro station to take the train
into town. After meeting Sally, the team knew they
had to work quickly. Luckily, the aroma of warm
popcorn travels at the speed of light (~300,000
kilometers per second or 186,000 miles per second)
so the seagulls materialized out of nowhere! The
team sprang into action, Linda handed the life-saving
vegetable product to the younger people, who stratigically
placed it so the seagulls could locate it. Meanwhile,
Sally was able to get the incredible scene on the internet.
One thing that was reinforced by this experience is the fact
that when a vertabrate injests, it also dejests.
Most of the facts in this story are factual, however some
are fictional. I will give the reader a chance to exercise your
little grey cells by figuring which is which.
