Summer in China

Tianjin

June 24 through Aug 10, 1998
Sally was selected, along with three other teachers in San Luis Obispo County (SLO Co), to participate in the County teacher exchange program with China.  She will be spending six weeks in the port city of Tianjin, introducing American culture to Chinese english teachers, and learning first hand about Chinese culture and their educational system.  She will be staying in dorm rooms on a high school campus and utilizing the class rooms for english instruction.

Eighty Chinese teachers (the students), from all over China will be taking an intensive 4-week summer course in English instruction from the SLO Co group.  Each morning, groups of 20 students will rotate through each of the 4 english teachers, spending one hour with each.  Then after a 2-hour lunch break, two more hours of activities will take palce.  Friday afternoons will consist of local field trips.

For the SLO Co group, first week will be a prep week and introduction to the area.  Then the four weeks of instruction occur, followed by a week of sight-seeing and conclusion to the experience.  Undoubtedly the time will fly.  Tianjin is a city of several million people.  Beijing is about an hour and a half drive inland.  An excursion to the Great Wall is also planned.
