There is a close battle going down to the wire in Tianjin!  In this message Sally provides the score, and with only one week to go, it is to close to call (bzzzzzz)!  She then recounts a banquet, for 7 AFS teachers from the United States, that provides one more feast, a live band, and the title of 'Dancing Queen'!  Sally was a dance minor and still knows how to move!  She also throws in some details of traditional Chinese medicine.

I must admit that I seamlessly integrated (edited) two separate messages that were sent at the same time.  During her slow recovery from a cold Sally describes a couple of days of lessons she presented.  Following that, paragraph after paragraph provides you with her intimately amusing answers to a wide variety of questions you people living in the 'world of the internet' have sent her.  She bravely steps her way through such profane subjects as 'excrement', 'body odor', and 'HMO', and then describes the difference between a 'pot sticker' and a 'dumpling'.

Sally has had a cold the last few days:
. . . I'm not feeling well enough to write anything about my teaching or other
stuff . . . or answer some of the questions you've forwarded to me from
other people.  But I will try to do it soon.  I'll probably get to it on
Wednesday or Thursday. . . Sally

Here is the explanation of the toilet rating system no tourist should be without!  Sally's group spent 3 days visiting Xi'an and she provides some of the highlights of the excursion.  These include missing their flight! a visit to Hard Rock Cafe in Beijing, a midnight 'private tour' of Teinnenman Square, a tourist view of thousands of terra-cotta soldiers, etc.

She also provides some answers to a few questions I have forwarded to her, she really enjoys hearing from friends in the states so don't hesitate to keep her in contact.

Sunday, July 5, afternoon:    email
After returning home from a hang gliding trip, I had a my first email messages from Sally.  Generally, I will give a short synopsis of the msg, with a link to my edited version of her actual message!  The first is of general interest to everyone.  It is some of her thoughts, feelings and experiences of her first week in Asia.  Another was sent after her first day of class.  Meet her students and react to a stultifying water story.

Because computer resources are so limited (one online computer for the school) Sally requests that I forward messages, greetings, etc.  Many people have access to the computer, so assume all messages are read by other people.  I will be happy to forward her replies to you also.  She would love to hear from YOU!

Sally said they have been attending fancy dinner banquets virtually every night.  Tonite she was sipping a $40 bottle of liquor and eating lobster!  She will start teaching her class on Sat. but first will spend a couple of days at the seaside.  They have not moved into the dorms they will be utilizing yet, staying in hotels instead.  She enjoyed her trip to the 'Great Wall' and shot a couple rolls of film.  They have visited several schools and the first place they always go is the 'honored guest reception room'!  It is a finely appointed, air conditioned lounge, in contrast to the rest of the school.  This kind of room does not exist in the USA schools, but then again, most schools here are fully air-conditioned.

Fri. June 26, 6:05 AM:     Phone
"Things are different here."  Sally, and the other teachers were introduced to the faculty and students of the No. 1 High School from a high balcony overlooking the roughly 2000 people.  Hints of Evita Peron flashed through her mind.  When she called, she was tired and preparing to go to sleep.  The next day (Sat) was a trip to the Great Wall.  Or at least a short section of it.
