Emails from china on Aug. 3, 1998

Hi Chris!!  We just got back from a bike ride!!  We were very brave and
decided that we could not leave China without taking a bike ride in the
city.  We first took a ride that ended us up in the middle of an apartment
building construction site.  We soon noticed that all the workers on every
floor of the surrounding buildings had stopped working to look at us.  We
must have been a very amusing site, because they all had large grins on
their faces.  We next took a leisurely ride through a beautiful park with a
lake (except I got three mosquito bites -- I think this gives them the
lead!!).  Then we braved the rush hour traffic on the city streets to visit
an arts and crafts workshop.  The bikes (borrowed) come complete with basket
on the front and a little bicycle bell (which comes in very handy to warn
pedestrians and other cyclists of your approach from behind).  We took some
pictures  . . . Sun said we were living dangerously: not only riding the
bicycles, but taking pictures at the same time!!  It was a great experience.

I need to go read papers. Only three more days of class and we have much to
do to prepare for the end of the course.  Bye for now!!

Sally

Well,  I can't really spend much time writing because I have a lot of work
to do preparing for the end of the course.  I have to read journals, grade
essays and oral presentations.  I also have to get ready to teach this
afternoon.  I'll see if I can get on-line this afternoon for a bit.  I hope
I get a message from you then!!

Lucy was so happy last night.  She sent her husband an e-mail and a few
minutes later her husband responded.  So I showed her how to write back and
forth to each other.  They spent an hour "conversing". She enjoyed it.

I'll write more later.

…I 'm hoping to throw myself a birthday party the weekend of the 29th…

…I'm so sad!!  You know all the little paper notes you left me in my luggage
and I told you that I was keeping them in my robe pocket? Well I washed my
robe...I went to look for them to read them again and suddenly realized
what I had done.  I was pouting and feeling very sorry for myself.  Maybe
you can make me some new ones to find in various places when I get home??

I have not used the chopsticks I brought.  It has not been necessary.  I
also have not yet read the book you gave me.  I'm so exhausted by the end of
the day, it's all I can do to write in my journal and some days I can't even
do that.  But I will read it in the future.  It has impacted our group,
though.  We are referred to as the "summer sisters." And we took our picture
in front of a statue of four young women.  We posed exactly the same as the
statue and we will entitle the picture, "Summer Sisters."

I'll write more later. . .  Sally
