One night, during the spring of '98, we were about to drive out of our carport when the car headlights eluminated this Common Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getulus californiae). It was between 4 and 5 feet long. I took the photo from the snakes point of view. These are great snakes to have as neighbors because their diet includes not only rodents, but rattle snakes! Of course they are harmless to humans.
